How To Install Android SDK On My OS / Ubuntu (Linux)

1. Introduction

Android SDK is a development environment for the Android mobile operating system which allows you to write applications for Android devices or gain elevated privileges on android devices with the help of third party software.

2. Requirements

  1. JDK

    1. Download : http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html

    2. Installation Instructions :

  2. Netbeans IDE / Eclipse IDE

    1. Netbeans IDE (Recommended : 7.0+ Version) : http://netbeans.org/downloads/

    2. Eclipse : http://www.eclipse.org/downloads/

  3. Android SDK

 

3. Installation

  1. Download Android SDK (*.tar.gz) for linux

  2. Create a new directory “android” under “/opt” directory, Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ sudo mkdir /opt/android
  3. Run the commands below to extract the downloaded file, and copy to “/opt/android” directory, Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ sudo tar xvzf android-sdk_r20-linux.tgz -C /opt/android
  4. After extracting the package, run the command below to changing group ownership of files and directories “/opt/android/”, Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ sudo chown -R username:username /opt/android/
  5. Finally, run the commands below to begin the installation, Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ ./opt/android/android-sdk-linux/tools/android

 

4. Create Menu to access Android SDK

  1. Open Main Menu (go to main menu -> preferences -> Main Menu), or Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ alacarte
  2. If you have seen window “Main Menu”, In the navigation pane on the left, click Programming category.

    • Click the “+ New Item” to add new laucher.

    • If you have seen window “Create Launcher”,

    • In the Name box, type “Android SDK Manager” (without quotes)

    • In the Command box, type “/opt/android/android-sdk-linux/tools/android” (without quotes), or Browse and locate the Android SDK (Ex : /opt/android/android-sdk-linux),

    • In the Commnet box, type “AndroidSDK For Linux” (without quotes)

    and then click the “OK” and “Close” button.

  3. To launch Android SDK Manager, go to Main Menu -> Programming -> Android SDK Manager.

 

5. Install Android updates

  1. Open Android SDK, go to Main Menu -> Programming -> Android SDK Manager

  2. Install Android updates if there are any available.

  3. After updating, run the commands below to include AndroidSDK in your path environment.

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ sudo gedit /etc/bash.bashrc
  4. Insert on the bottom row in “bash.bashrc” following code:

    export PATH=${PATH}:/opt/android/android-sdk-linux/tools
    export PATH=${PATH}:/opt/android/android-sdk-linux/platform-tools
  5. After finished add path environtment, reboot your computer to complete configuration. Inside terminal, execute the following command :

    dnd@riyaniezt:~$ sudo reboot

 

6. Creating Virtual Android

  1. Open Android SDK Manager, go to Main Menu -> Programming -> Android SDK Manager

  2. Click the tools menu and select Manages AVDs….

  3. To create new AVD, click the button “New”.

  4. If you have seen configuration window,

    • Name, type Android412″ (without quotes)

    • Target, choose Android 4.1.2

    • CPU/ABI, choose ARM(armeabi-v7a)

    • SDK card size, type “64″ (without quotes)

    • Skin, choose HVGA

  5. After finished your configuration, and then click the “Create AVD” button, and then click the button “OK”.

  6. To launch new AVD, click the “Start …” button.

  7. You should see a window that looks like this :
